Brenda Song Celebrates Single Awareness Day

The 20-year-old Suite Life starlet dished on her two younger brothers, how she spent her Valentine’s Day and plans for her 21st birthday. Check it:

JJJ: You reportedly recorded a couple of songs once, and the album was never released. Fact or fiction?

BS: Here’s the thing, it’s not even true! I recorded A song, and it was literally a test track for one of my friends. It was like a joke, and they totally mixed it! I did like, a verse, for Disney Channel, but there was no album or anything like that. My last name is Song, but there is no song coming out of me! (laughs)

JJJ: Would you ever want to? Have you ever had any vocal training?

BS: I never say never, but right now I am focusing on acting. And I did! It’s the scariest thing! I always think that practice makes perfect, but I really feel like singing is something you need to be passionate about. And I feel that if i don’t sound like Christina Aguilera, I don’t get to call myself a singer!

JJJ: Do you play any instruments?

BS: I wish! I’m so not musical at all! You have no idea, I wish!

JJJ: Your mom is Thai, what is your dad?

BS: He’s Hmong, and my mom was adopted into a Hmong family. Hmong are kind of… mountain people between Laos and Thailand.

JJJ: Being an Asian actress, are there any obstacles you have to overcome?

BS: It was difficult being 7-years-old and walking into a room and knowing that they weren’t listening to you because you weren’t the look they wanted. It just makes you work ten times as hard! And I realize now that when you go in there, it’s not about what you look like, it’s about what you can do. I think that’s an important thing that people need to remember. It’s not about what you look like or where you’re from, it’s about what you can do!

I mean, it’s a difficult thing to learn at a young age, but I think that especially with channels like the Disney Channel and other great networks, they are really expanding. There’s almost no such thing as an “ethnic barrier” anymore, which is really wonderful because that’s what the world is like today! I can walk down the street and meet someone from New York, from Germany, from LA, Japan, and that’s what the world looks like. I think that people are starting to see that, and that makes me happy.

JJJ: Do you have or keep any Asian traditions?

BS: Well, our dad only speaks Hmong to us at home. I speak Hmong. And we don’t have a written history, so my dad is very big on the fact that we need to keep it in the family. Tradition-wise… all I need to do is call my grandma! (laughs)

JJJ: What advice would you give to an aspiring Asian actress?

BS: Not even just to someone who wants to be an actress, or someone who wants to be a singer, or doctor, or lawyer, or President! Whatever! Anything that you want to be: just stay focused! Work hard and surround yourself with good people, and anything can happen! I was 3-years-old and watching TV, and I wanted to be on TV. My parents didn’t know how to get on TV! They thought we had to somehow climb into the TV. (laughs) Regardless of what ethnicity you are or where you come from, as long as you stay focused and work hard, I truly believe anything can happen.

I’m so fortunate that I get to wake up every single day and I get to live out my dream. Who gets to say that? I wake up and I get to go to work, which is doing what I always dreamed of doing. So whatever it is you want to do, stay focused! I mean it! Anything can happen.

JJJ: Who are your favorite actors?

BS: It’s so hard, but I love James McAvoy, Matt Damon…I love Angelina Jolie and Nicole Kidman.

JJJ: Would you model your career after someone else’s?

BS: Oh my gosh, I wish! It’s really so hard because everyone is so different, and everyone has a unique story to tell, but I love Reese Witherspoon. I think she’s made a great transition from being a child actress to a teen star to now being an adult actress and a mother. She’s just so talented.

JJJ: Do you have any celebrities that you look to for fashion inspiration?

BS: I love Victoria Beckham, I love J.Lo… They have the most amazing style! I feel like the thing I love about Victoria Beckham is not just her style, but regardless of what she’s wearing, whether it’s something outrageous or whatever, she rocks it. She loves it! She truly loves what she’s wearing. There are a lot of people who wear stuff because it’s the hot thing to wear, but she and J.Lo love what they’re wearing all the time.

JJJ: How did you spend your Valentine’s Day?

BS: Oh, it was really sweet. I went out to dinner with a friend, and usually on Valentine’s Day I spend it with my girlfriends because we call it “S.A.D.” – Single Awareness Day. And usually we watch our favorite Valentine’s Day movie…which is like, Titanic or The Notebook, and we eat ice cream. And we also…either crush or dump on boys!

But this year was great, I went out with my friend, and it was very chill. I was saying that Valentine’s Day is the day you focus on love, but every day should be that kind of day! We went to a restaurant, because I love to eat, and I always try to find any way to eat.

JJJ: Was it a male or female friend?

BS: Ah! You’re going there! It was a male friend. (giggles)

JJJ: What is your favorite place to shop?

BS: (deep breath) The internet! Saks.com is my favorite.

JJJ: Favorite candy?

BS: Oh, that’s hard! Twix? Rolos? I love candy.

JJJ: Celeb crush?

BS: Kobe Bryant.

JJJ: Favorite breakfast food?

BS: Ooooh…crepes!

JJJ: Favorite go-to dish that you make when friends come over?

BS: Macaroni and cheese.

JJJ: You’re turning 21 later this month, what are you going to do for it?

BS: I’ve always been into small little soirees, but I actually have no idea what I’m doing. I’m turning 21 and I have no idea what I’m doing! Probably just hanging out with friends.

JJJ: You have two brothers, what do they do?

BS: They’re in school right now – they’re 18 and 13. They’re both younger, but they’re both bigger than me!

JJJ: Are they ever going to get into the entertainment business?

BS: Well, I convinced Nate, because Nate and I cook all the time, so he’s done a Pass the Plate with me. But…probably not. They’re into Jujitsu and all that crazy stuff.

JJJ: Those were all my questions, that was fast.

BS: Oh my gosh, I know, I do talk fast!
