Saoirse Ronan Lands 'The Hobbit' Role

Saoirse Ronan Lands 'The Hobbit' Role

Saoirse Ronan is headed back to work with Peter Jackson — in The Hobbit!

According to casting director Ros Hubbard, the 17-year-old Irish actress does indeed have a role in the upcoming film.

Saoirse will reportedly play Itaril, a Sylvan Elf who is a part of the Woodland Kings Guard.

The Hobbit follows Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) and his journey to the Lonely Mountain accompanied by a group of dwarves to reclaim a treasure taken from them by the dragon Smaug. The movie is set to open December 2012.

WHAT DO YOU THINK of Saoirse’s new role?

i love saoirse but itaril is a made up character that doesn’t even exist in the book. stupid! :/

@robyn: Why? Because it didn’t had sparkly/emo vampires and bulky werewolves??? Maybe it’s not your cup of tea, but don’t insult the brilliant and creative genius that J.R.R Tolkien was by saying that one of his greatest books “sucked” according to you!!!

If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything!!!

    Thank you.

im so happy for saoirse! shes by far the greatest teen actor outthere.

by the way, she’s still 16. she turns 17 in april :)

It has been a long time since I read “The Hobbit,” so I don’t remember a character named Itaril. Someone else said it is a made up character for the movie that didn’t exist in the book. I hope they dont take too many liberties with it. I already find it a bit disturbing that they are planning a second movie that is not drawn directly from Tolkien’s writing. I’m happy for Saoirse though. She is a very talented actress and will make a great elf. She already kind of looks like one (not meaning that in a bad way). I hope they let her use her own Irish accent in this one. I mean they had a Hobbit with a Scottish accent in “the Lord of the Rings” movies so why not?

@robyn: “The Hobbit” ? Are you serious, kid? It’s amazing. Go and read your Twilight crap.
