OlderDemi Lovato Opens Up to '20/20'
Demi Lovato arrives at LAX Airport to catch a flight out of town on Saturday (April 23) in Los Angeles.
The day before, the 18-year-old entertainer’s, wearing reef‘s “Miss Braidy” sandals, candid interview about her personal struggles aired on ABC’s 20/20.
Here’s what Demi had to share:
On cutting: “It was a way of expressing my own shame, of myself, on my own body. I was matching the inside to the outside. And there were some times where my emotions were just so built up, I didn’t know what to do. The only way that I could get instant gratification was through an immediate release on myself.”
On developing an eating disorder: “I was compulsively overeating when I was 8 years old … So, I guess, for the past 10 years I’ve had a really unhealthy relationship with food.”
On her turning point: “I was performing concerts on an empty stomach. I was losing my voice from purging and I literally was so emotionally whacked out that I took it out on someone that meant a lot to me. I take 100 percent full responsibility. The second I kind of came out of my mania and realized what I had done I felt sick. [My family and management team] sat me down and said, ‘You can’t live like this. You need to get help.’ And that’s exactly what I did.”

She is such an inspiration! And she is a clear example that she is only human. She is not perfect and thats what i love about Demi :) Her music is amazing and tells true feeling! #StayStrong has become my new motto because of Demi :D <3
was never really a big fan of hers. but after watching that interview, i’ve gained a whole new respect for her.
all she has been so difficult and complicated, there are people who are bad bullying is very bad as someone is happy to hurt someone else, self mutilation is so painful, but I’m very proud of Demi be strong to overcome everything, WE LOVE YOU!

all this is really hard, she is a very strong girl and now all these issues will be addressed openly and with respect and lots of people will be helped, I’m proud of Demi!

she is so mature for someone of 18 years, all she has been very complicated and yet she was strong to overcome, proud of Demi!

I was never a huge fan of her, but I always respected her, and now more than ever. The things she has to go through are so hard. And this all started from bullying. I think even though she has been has had a lot of scandalous situations (mainly the punch), she is truly a fantastic role model.

Sadly the bullying continues on so many levels through gossip sites, twitter, emails etc. Some people dont realise how much damage they do and worse they don’t even care. Its one thing to have an opinion on someones hair or dress but many comments go far beyond that!!

wow. just goes to show you don’t know about what goes on in celebrities lives no matter how good it seems on the outside. I love her and hope she stays strong! Really glad that she’s healthy now :)
demi had awesome courage to speak bout her problems and take full responsiblity. I’m a cutter in recovery and seeing that she can do it shows me that I can do it to, that I can stay strong.

after everything she has been through,hell on earth,almost.. she came out on top.. she is the perfect role model for girls with issues like hers.. never give up and always have hope.
Im not a Demi fan but I am very happy for her & how brave she has been this whole time. I would also like to point out that some “Demi Fans” that were crapping on the girl Demi punched, are probably eating their words now. I honestly think its important to have friends who look out for you no matter if their choices might not be popular with the friend they are looking out for. All in all, Demi is an extremely talented singer and I wish her the best of luck during her recovery and in her career :D
