JJJ Book Club Pick For May: 'Awaken' By Katie Kacvinsky

Close your eyes and picture this — you’ve never set foot outside; you’ve never felt the grass beneath your feet or felt the sensation of the Sun on your face.

Everything, and we do mean everything, is done digitally in the year 2060 and this is what Maddie has grown up to know. Kids no longer go to schools — They stay home and take classes online. Adults work from home, too.

Even dating is no longer done in person. Why walk on a real beach when you can stroll down a digitally remastered one instead? No bad weather, no seagulls, nothing real to ruin a perfectly fine time.

In Katie Kacvinsky‘s “Awaken,” Maddie’s okay with the solitary, digital life, for the most part—until she meets Justin. Justin likes being with people. He enjoys the physical closeness of face-to-face interactions. People aren’t meant to be alone, he tells her.

Maddie is definitely drawn to him, but there’s also something very aloof about him, like perhaps he’s hiding something. When she uncovers the truth, she’s faced with the question: What’s more important, fighting for what you believe in or love?

Head on over to Ms. Kacvinsky‘s website to see what inspired the novel and stay tuned for more of the JJJ Book Club!

“Awaken” hits shelves on Monday, May 23rd.
