Shawn Johnson is heading back to the beam…and the vault…and the bars!
On getting back in the game: “We’re using CoverGirl as a test run. My first one out. Testing the waters and getting my confidence back and Nationals will be my first real competition. That’s the plan so far. I’ll do three events at each meet – maybe four at Championships. [I'll be doing the] Vault, bars, and beam for CoverGirl. If I add floor it will be a pretty watered down routine. It’s taken the longest time to get floor back just because my knee. That’s something we’re working on slowly.”
On what she hopes to achieve: “I’m not setting any expectations or real big goals for CoverGirl. I just want to go back out there and show everybody that I’m back and I’m taking it seriously. I know that I don’t have the difficulty right now to compete or to place and get high scores.”
On taking baby steps: “My ideal world would be to go back at Worlds and that be my first meet and be even stronger than I was at the Olympics, but I know that’s not possible. Just going back at CoverGirl and making little goals like finishing a clean routine and not making big mistakes and just giving it my best. As of right now I’m not making any goals or looking at scores or placements because it’s not really an option right now.”
On thanking her lucky stars she’s still in the game: “I’m honestly just proud that I’ve made it this far. I’ve gone from not being able to do a standing tuck to doing full beam routines at the elite level and bar routines and a full vault and I’m healthy, and back in shape. I kind of got my life back on track and I feel good. I try to take a step back and acknowledge that.”
Shawn is currently on the 2011 U.S. National Team and working on getting into the 2012 Olympics, which will be held in London.
