Lauren Alaina takes the stage for a special performance after being announced as the new Special Olympics Project UNIFY Ambassador during NYLC’s 23rd Annual National Service-Learning Conference at the Minneapolis Convention Center on Wednesday (April 11) in Minneapolis, Minn.
The 17-year-old American Idol alum attended a conference for the big announcement before the concert.
“I am honored to be asked to be an Ambassador for Special Olympics. I have been involved with the local chapter in my hometown since I was in 6th grade,” Lauren shared in a statement. “There is nothing that makes me happier or inspires me more than spending time with the athletes. I have made friends for life and they did their part to support me throughout my run on American Idol. Now, it is my turn to support them and help bring awareness to this wonderful organization.”
Project UNIFY brings youth with and without intellectual disabilities together through education, sports and related initiatives to provide them with the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to create and sustain school communities that promote the acceptance, respect and human dignity for all students.
Lauren will be assisting Special Olympics’ efforts to raise awareness and change the attitudes of youth toward people with intellectual disabilities who struggle to be accepted, heard and included in society.
