JJJ Book Club Pick For August: 'The Raft' By S.A. Bordeen

Just imagine…you’re flying to place that goes over a body of water — any body of water — and your plane goes down. What do you do?

The JJJ Book Club‘s pick for the month of August, “The Raft” by S.A. Bodeen, takes us to that place and into the mind of Robie, who is on a raft in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

WHAT IT’S ABOUT: Robie, who’s the possibly the only teen on Midway Atoll, is headed to visit her aunt in Honolulu, Hawaii. On the flight back, she catches a cargo flight at the last minute. She knows the pilot, but on this flight, there’s a new co-pilot named Max. All systems are go until a storm hits during the flight. She doesn’t panic — until Max tosses her a life jacket and in an instant, there’s water. Max pulls her onto the raft, and that’s when the real terror begins. They have no water. Their only food is a bag of Skittles. There are sharks. There is an island. But there’s no sign of help on the way.

WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT: A departure from the dystopian novels we all know and are reading, “The Raft” is a book about now and about survival. Action packed and full of suspense, you’ll be on the edge of your seat and turning page after page just to see what happens next. Most likely, you’ll read this in one sitting.

HONORABLE MENTIONS: “Earth Girl” by Janet Edwards, “Defiance” by C.J. Redwine and “The Rise of Nine” by Pittacus Lore.
