JustJaredJr.com Interview – Coco Jones
JustJaredJr.com: Hi Coco! So you’re currently on tour with Mindless Behavior! What’s it like being on the road with four boys?
Coco Jones: They are so funny. They remind me so much of my little brother and my older brother, because they are crazy but then actually really mature. But then crazy again (laughs). They are really fun and we just goof around and then we’re like, “Oh wait. I came here to do a job.” It’s funny and I’m having a blast with them. I love being on the tour bus. It’s so awesome!
JJJ: You’re also playing a few shows with Austin Mahone soon. Have you met him before?
CJ: I met him when we did the Easter Egg Roll at the White House. He was super sweet and I saw him again at the Radio Disney Music Awards. I know him good.
JJJ: Do your friends and family come to your shows? Do you like performing for them?
CJ: I don’t like to do that (laughs). I don’t like it at all. I don’t like performing in front of people who are related to me, or my friends. I don’t know. When I look out and see them, I’m like, “Oh my gosh. Stop looking at me!” I can feel it (laughs).
JJJ: Do you generally get nervous?
CJ: Not really. I get a little bit nervous right before I step on stage because I have this introduction, so right there, that’s when I get a little bit nervous but also pumped up. And then I sing and I’m like, “I forgot I was nervous.”
JJJ: You’re on the road a lot, so how do you find time for school?
CJ: Right now I’m on summer break, thank the Lord. But I go back in August and I’m home-schooled, so I take my school everywhere. It follows me.
JJJ: Tell us about your upcoming album! How’s it coming along?
CJ: I’m almost done. I have one more song to pick, but everything is pretty much ready to go. I don’t have a set date yet and I don’t even have a title. But all the music is done! I’m really excited for people to here it because I’ve worked with some great people, like David Banner and Ester Dean, and Jukebox, who did “Whip My Hair” for Willow [Smith]. I’m excited for everyone to hear once I get it out there.
JJJ: How does the album compare to your EP?
CJ: The difference is, it’s just a deeper view of me. It’s still fun and light songs, but it’s just a different feel. There are some songs that are more ballads and there are other songs that are very Beyonce. And then there’s a song that has this real live instruments in there. So yeah, just a little deeper version of Coco.
JJJ: You’re so busy touring and finishing up your album, but what do you do in your free time?
CJ: I love to sleep, which is weird. I never thought I would say that! I get excited when I get a day off and I get to wake up at 11. But I like to do regular teenage stuff. I like to hang out with my friends and go to the movies and the mall. For some reason, I’m really into clothes right now. I just like putting stuff together and being all fashion-y. I like to sleepover and have slumber parties, even though that rarely happens. Sometimes I’ll only be home for 12 hours and I’m like, “Let’s go to the movies, say hey, and then bye!” But my friends totally get it. I’m not going to be able to go to every party and they get that, which is good.
JJJ: How have your friends adjusted to not seeing you all the time?
CJ: Since I was five, I’ve been talking about so they’re just happy to see me finally living my dreams instead of talking about it all the time (laughs). That had to get on people’s nerves. In middle school, I used to be like, “You guys need to get over me and say your goodbyes because next year I’m going to be famous, OK?” Every year and then I go back, and I have to go in and see everybody. “Hey, hey, I know I’m not famous yet. Next year!”
JJJ: What’s a typical fan encounter like for you?
CJ: It differs. I’ve had people cry when I say “Hey.” And then I’ve had people who are like, “How do I get where you are?” Those people that really want to know, and that’s how I was. I’d meet people and I’d be like, “I love you, but can you tell me everything you did to get to your success right now?” That’s how I’d be and that’s how some fans are. And then other people are nervous and don’t say anything. It just differs every time and it really shocks me when I see a crazy, crazy fan. Because I don’t really ever have super crazy fans, not all the time. But when I see one, and they start crying when I sign my autograph, I’m like, “Really? For a ‘C’ and an ‘O’?” I just get shocked.
JJJ: Who would you be starstruck to meet?
Be on the lookout for Coco’s upcoming debut album! We can’t wait to hear it!
