Sophie Nélisse: 'The Book Thief' Trailer - Watch Now!

Sophie Nélisse gets a little dirty in the brand new trailer for The Book Thief!

Based on the book of the same name by Markus Zusak, Liesel Meminger (Nélisse) is a foster girl living outside of Munich, who scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can’t resist–books.

With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement.

The Book Thief opens November 15th.

Already I can spot some major problems. Why does this trailer present it as some inspirational children’s movie? Does no one remember the ending? Or the beginning for that matter? Also, I’m confused about Liesel’s foster mother. In the book, wasn’t she supposed to be fat and fairly ugly? How are they going to deal with Liesel growing up? When did Hans Hubermann have time to paint those detailed letters on the wall (why do they even have chalkboard paint for that matter)?

Basically I’m just concerned that they’re going to turn this movie into some sort of fluffy, heartwarming schmoop that you forget about after watching it. The book deserves so much more than that.

    Looks beautiful. I can’t wait.
