Lily Collins: 'The Mortal Instruments' Sequel Canceled?

A few weeks earlier, the 24-year-old actress hit the premiere of her film The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones in Mexico City, Mexico.

It was recently announced by Constantin Film that principal photography on the sequel, The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes, has been postponed indefinitely, due to box office numbers of the first film.

“Constantin Film has a long tradition of adapting books to the big screen. Pushing back the start of production of City of Ashes was a decision we did not take lightly,” producer and exec Martin Moszkowicz said in a statement. “After speaking with all of our partners on the creative and distribution side, it was clear that it will be beneficial to have more time to reposition the film in the current market place.”

FYI: Lily is carrying a Zadig & Voltaire bag.

I really hope they rewrite the script and get some really talented writers on board to reboot the series. I love the actors involved and cassie’s story. but of course I’d rather have it not come to life if it doesn’t do her beautiful story justice!

Lily looks very pretty as usual even after a long airplane journey.

No surprise about The mortal instruments being cancelled and I say this a Lily super fan that it was obvious that movie was going to be about as successful as The Host and Beautiful Creatures. The TMI books are no good anyway and Cassandra Clare is a plagiarising hack.

Postponed not cancelled. Actors are contracted for 2 movies. Cassandra even confirmed on her blog/site that the movie will happen. They just want a solid script that they feel fans will like more.

Honestly I read the book after watching the movie and I thought they did the book justice. Changed some things but stayed true to the major plot lines. The actors they chose were amazing in their part both Lily and Jamie. I really hope they do a third movie if the second does better then the first. I want to see the Jace/Clary storyline finish out. If at least a third movie isn’t done then that will leave a lot of fans that actually enjoyed the film hanging.

Biggest no no is that people compared this movie to Twilight for some reason. Not sure why. I actually liked TMI better then Twilight because even though there was a three way love triangle like in Twilight it wasn’t full of angst. New Moon drove me nuts with it when Edward left. Its probably why its my least favorite Twilight film.

Critics also turned a lot of people off TMI before they even watched it. That’s why I never go by what critics say. Only word of mouth from friends. Movies Critics tend to love I hate and ones they don’t like tend to be the ones I like the most.

@wENDY:

Cassandra did not confirm they were making the next film. “Postponed” and “delay” are movie speak for cancelled. It’s highly possible Ashes won’t be made.

*correction for the typo in my earlier post. I meant to say “I say this as a Lily super fan”

The movie was very good. As a huge fan of the books I understand the screenplay needed refining but comparing it to any other franchise diminishes its uniqueness. The story is epic and if continued to be made into movies can grow to be a cult classic. It is a story that fits for both genders but being compared to twilight on the get go is what may have reduced its success. The comparison is probably what hindered people from going as many disliked the twilight franchise, as I did. A rework on the promotion is what is needed.

People on various sites have reported why it’s a bomb, so a sequel is unlikely. First off, the co-president of the studios reported a marketing budget of 60 million so the total cost, marketing + production, was 120 million. Secondly, studios only keep 55% of box office receipts, splitting the rest with movie theatres, so the film needs to make 220 million worldwide to break even. It won’t make more than 20 million max off DVD sales and more likely 15 million from DVD sales. And syndication rights and product/merchandising won’t net it more than 20 million either.

it would be good if you could actually get to see the film !only on for one week odeon maidstone! and not at all in Scarborough( united kingdom ) .

That’s too bad if it is canceled.
