Lorde Covers New Zealand's 'Metro' Magazine

Lorde graces the October 2013 cover of New Zealand’s Metro magazine.

The 16-year-old singer opened up about her beliefs on feminism.

“I think women who say, ‘No, I’m not a feminist – I love men,’ I think that is just… You don’t know what it means. You think it means that, ‘I don’t shave under my arms, I burn my bras. F— men!’ How could you be so uneducated, and so unwilling to learn about something which is so important to you?” she says.

Lorde continued about the influence she has on other young women: “Taylor Swift is so flawless, and so unattainable, and I don’t think it’s breeding anything good in young girls. ‘I’m never going to be like Taylor Swift, why can’t I be as pretty as Lorde?’ That’s f—— bullshit.”

shes a v. pretty young girl. and has a certain maturity about her that makes her stand out among other artists her age. her look on life and music genre reminds me of birdie.

I don’t understand her remark about Taylor Swift at all. Is she saying that because Taylor’s attractive she shouldn’t be in the limelight? Just because Taylor is pretty doesn’t take anything away from her songwriting ability, the fact that she can play multiple instruments, and the fact that she’s the most popular live act this year. Is she honestly suggesting people not focus on Taylor’s talent and instead be mad that she’s successful because she’s pretty?

She is one hit wonder with a loud mouth. Lots of 16 yr-olds think they know everything. She should think more before trying to shade industry heavyweights. Especially when Taylor is very loved among actual feminist leaders.

@Jane johnson no that’s not what she’s saying, Lorde is saying that Taylor Swift mostly centres her songs about love and crushes and her relationships, making girls dream about finding the right boy, and that can sometimes be a bad thing for girls to follow because you should be concentrating on following your passions and ambitions, if you listen to Lorde’s songs her songs arent so specific that they’re about a romantic relationship, they could be related to friendship.

So nothing about her being pretty but what she’s representing – girls finding the fairytale love.

If that’s how you perceive the comments she has made, then I’m very concerned with Taylor Swift’s fans’ views of modern society.
