'The Originals' Premiere Recap: 'Always & Forever'

How awesome was tonight’s (October 3) premiere of The Originals?!

While we already saw the backdoor pilot during the last season of The Vampire Diaries, “Always & Forever” gave us insight into Elijah’s (Daniel Gillies) perspective.

We got to see how he came to know about Hayley’s (Phoebe Tonkin) pregnancy and Marcel’s (Charles Michael Davis) reign of terror. Not to mention, there were a ton of new scenes and shocking surprises!

The episode starts off with a flashback to over 300 years ago when the Original family first found their way to New Orleans. There were several flashbacks actually, none of which were particularly necessary to advance the plot, but they did give us a vital look back at how this family came to be so broken.

Back in present day, after Jane-Anne is murdered for practicing the witchcraft to confirm the pregnancy, Marcel takes her body to punish her sister Sophie (Daniella Pineda). And because Sophie still has a lot of information that Elijah wants, he makes a deal with the witches to retrieve her body and convince Klaus (Joseph Morgan) to agree to help them rebel against Marcel. OK, fine. It’s not so much a deal as it is bribery, as Sophie’s life is tied to Hayley’s (just in case).

Marcel spends much of the episode threatening people and inquiring about Klaus’ intentions, but Elijah quickly shuts that down. He’s a very noble man and there is no way he’s going to let anyone put his family in danger. This includes Hayley now. They share some very sweet moments together and he lets her in on the family history. He even buys her a house to live in! Is it just us or do we see a new romance brewing?

In addition to the added Elijah and Hayley scenes (Halijah?), we also get to witness a brotherly confrontation that took place before Klaus seemingly accepted the baby news. Elijah apologizes for not coming to his aid when their father would physically abuse him for being a werewolf. This was another scene that wasn’t needed per se, but added so many more layers and gave that much more impact for what was to come…

Which was…Klaus stakes Elijah! As much as he wants to help, Klaus knows that his morality can be a liability. So in the end, he removes that from the equation. Who saw that coming?!

Oh, and as for Marcel’s power over the witches, he uses a young witch named Davina (Danielle Campbell) to keep tabs on them. Sneaky!
