'The Vampire Diaries' Season 5 Premiere Recap: 'I Know What You Did Last Summer'

SPOILER ALERT: DO NOT CONTINUE IF YOU DON’T WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED!!!

The fifth season of The Vampire Diaries kicked off tonight (October 3) and it almost felt like a whole different show! We loved it!

After a summer of romance for Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena (Nina Dobrev), it’s time for her to go off to college with Caroline (Candice Accola) and Bonnie (Kat Graham). Except, they are still very unaware that Bonnie is dead.

Stefan (Paul Wesley) continues to drown at the bottom of the quarry thanks to Silas (Wesley), while Katherine (Dobrev) deals with the aftermath of taking the cure.

Meanwhile, Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) has a lot of explaining to do back at school after returning from the dead, and Matt (Zach Roerig) comes back to Mystic Falls following a hot summer abroad with Rebekah (Claire Holt).

We start the episode off with Damon and Elena making out between the sheets. That’s right, Delena is together! And happy! Who knew? But, she’s still concerned about Stefan, who she thinks ran off after she confessed her love for his brother. Instead, he’s locked underwater in a safe. She’s been having dreams about him, but Caroline (AKA captain of Team Stefan) is there to tell her to let him go.

Elena and Caroline move into their dorm where they quickly realize they have an unwanted roommate, Megan, who also happens to drink vervain water. She doesn’t last very long though, and is thrown from a window at a party the girls can’t enter (pesky threshold vamp rules and all). But Elena isn’t done with her. She finds a picture of Megan with her father! Are they long lost relatives? Is her dad still alive?!? Meanwhile, Tyler breaks it off with Caroline, leaving her heartbroken. Though, there is some college guy who is definitely willing to help with that.

Silas spends much of the episode pretending to be Stefan, but Jeremy’s hunter sense quickly helps him figure it out. By the end of the episode, most people come to know that Silas is Stefan’s doppelganger. He’s after Katherine who enlists Damon to help her get out of town. Instead, she ends up nearly killing Jeremy in a car wreck. Shocker.

Jeremy keeps Bonnie busy since, you know, she’s a ghost and he’s the only one that can see her. Elena helps him come up with a cover story for his death last season. He faked it! Not the best alibi, but this is Mystic Falls we’re talking about. He gets into a fight at school and gets expelled, but Damon’s compulsion skills conveniently fix that before Elena can find out.

Poor Stefan hallucinates conversations with Damon to keep himself busy underwater. In the dreams, Damon tries to get him to turn off his humanity, but it’s Elena who convinces him not to. Stelena fans, this scene was for you!

Matt is back to working at the Grille and making out with Rebekah on the regular. It seems one of their friends from abroad, Nadia, stole Matt’s Gilbert ring! He was ready to confess the news to Elena, but not before Nadia appeared out of nowhere and performed some (seemingly) witchy spell on him!

In the last scene, Silas makes a big statement when he flexes his mind control skills in the town square. Then he proceeds to kill Bonnie’s dad right in front of her!!!
