The 23-year-old actor opened up about his role as Max in The Book Thief. Check it:
On taking on the role of Max: “I tried to use the book’s legacy as motivation to tell the story as honestly as I could. There’s a sense of responsibility that comes with taking on a role, especially one that is adapted from another medium, so I tried to do my best to carry that responsibility with the integrity I think it deserves.”
On filming in the German winter: “It was piercing! It’s a different kind of cold in Germany. One night, we had to get one shot of a scene when I first show up at the Hubermanns’, and it was like one in the morning, and I figured, Right, I’m supposed to be freezing in the scene; let’s do it. So I didn’t put on any thermals under my wardrobe. In my naïveté, I also thought, surely one shot will only take a few minutes! Cut to an hour later…it was the coldest I’ve ever been in my life! I almost passed out when we wrapped that night; our on-set medic was pouring supplements for me to take.”
The Book Thief is out NOW.??
