'Vampire Diaries' Scoop: Are Damon & Elena Really Over?

Fans of Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena (Nina Dobrev) were in for a shock when they broke up during the mid-season finale of The Vampire Diaries.

But does this mean that the fan-favorite couple is done for good? And does it open the door for Elena and Stefan (Paul Wesley) again?

“I wouldn’t say it’s a reset of the triangle,” executive producer Caroline Dries told TVGuide. “What the show does well is that it doesn’t just make rash decisions with people that causes them to just stop loving the people they love. Damon and Elena have a deep-rooted love for each other and you can’t just turn your back on that. Elena will always feel that for Damon even if they fight or [break up]. But we will see in future episodes that there is a huge strain in their relationship, bigger than them in a way.”

Meanwhile, Bonnie is in for some trouble too. “Part of her personality now is that she carries this cross,” Caroline told TVLine.com, adding that “No relationship on this show is safe for too long. [Bonnie and Jeremy are] going to hit some speedbumps.”
