Russia's Adelina Sotnikova Wins Gold in Ladie's Free Skate; Team USA's Gracie, Ashley & Polina in Top Ten at Sochi Olympics

Russia’s Adeline Sotnikova wraps herself in her country’s flag alongside Korea’s Yuna Kim and Italy’s Carolina Kostner, after winning the gold medal during the ladie’s free skate at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics held at Iceberg Skating Palace on Thursday night (February 20) in Sochi, Russia.

Adelina, 17, was passed over for the team event where Russia won gold with sensation Yulia Lipnitskaya — she ended up 5th, overall.

“I really wanted to participate in the team competition because I understood that we would win a medal because our team is so strong,” Adelina shared with press afterwards. “When I found out I was not in the team, I felt so sorry and I felt offended. I felt so cheated in a way. Anyway, I still had my goal to show this skating, the one that I did today. Maybe it is all for the best that I didn’t compete in the team competition and it was an advantage for me that it made me so mad to win the gold medal.”

Team USA’s Gracie Gold, Ashley Wagner and Polina Edmunds were strong on the ice, with only a few falls on jumps between them. They all ended up in the top ten — Gracie, 4th, Ashley, 7th and Polina, 9th.

I have watched her performace two times to make sure to try to trust the judges…She was good but I don’t think she is qualified to get more scores than Yuna’s. She shook hands during her performace…It is like she already knew the result.
IT WAS NOT A GALA SHOW!

Why did Sotnikova suddenly earn 18 points higher than at her season best, not too long ago? Why was her two-foot landing, stumble in the step sequence, and very obviously crooked triple jump ignored? Poor Yuna! She made the technical fault of not being born in Russia.

Why watch the Olympics when there’s going to be unfair scoring? This years women’s figure skating was completely rigged and many of us know that. Sad for her that many true figure skating fans don’t believe that she earned that gold medal. There is no way she is on par with Kim yuna. Really disappointed. She even left her seat while Kim yuna was talking on their interview. Immature and unclassy.

Hi Guys,, it’s not about Yuna Kim should win sochi..
It’s about Adelina,, she did a great job,, but let’s be honest,
she didn’t skate gold.. Even if Yuna didn’t, at least
Carolina is the one who really did it..

I was brought to tears when Yuna would keep on insisting that she was okay and that the gold’s owner should be someone who needs it the most. But we’ve seen the behind-the-scenes video of her in tears before going to the podium. I’m so sorry that she could’nt be rewarded of her talent.
She told the Korean press that she knew she would be receiving lower scores due to the circumstances of the competition, she felt that in the atmosphere. Queen Yuna’s grace and kind heart adds another reason to why I have come to respect this young woman. She is a true champion.

Russia insists that the Olympic for ladies single Figure Skating is a reasonable result however, if you take a closer look of the Total Planned Elements score you will find how ridiculous their statement is.

The “Jump” which is the factor that decides the Base Value is higher when the jump difficulty is higher and lower when it is lower, When we only consider if we had triple jump, 3A (Triple Axel) has the most highest difficulty followed by the the 3Lz (Triple Lutz), the 3F (Triple Flip), the 3Lo (Triple Loop), the 3S(Triple Salchow), and the 3T (Triple toe loop).
Both Yuna Kim and Adelina Sotnikova did not have 3A which is Triple Axel in the program, thus if we take a look at the Jump composition it will be like this (Both Short/Long Program are included) :

Yuna Kim
Ki3Lz+3T(Triple Lutz+ Triple toe loop) 10.10
3F(Triple Flip) 5.30
2A(Double Axel) 3.63
3Lz+3T(Triple Lutz+ Triple toe loop) 10.10
3F(Triple Flip) 5.30
3S+2T(Triple Salchow +Double Toe) 5.50
3Lz(Triple Lutz) 6.60
2A+2T+2Lo(Double Axel+Double Toe+Double Loop) 7.04
3S(Triple Salchow) 4.62
2A(Double Axel) 3.63

Adelina Sotnikova
3T+3T(Triple toe loop + Triple toe loop) 8.20
3F(Triple Flip) 5.30
2A(Double Axel) 3.63
3Lz+3T (*Triple Lutz[Wrong Edge]+ Triple toe loop) 10.10 *=Wrong Edge
3F(Triple Flip) 5.30
3Lo(Triple Loop) 5.10
2A+3T(Double Axel+Triple Toe Loop) 8.14
3F+2T+2Lo(Triple Flip+Double Toe+Double Loop) 9.24 -> Two foot Landing
3S(Triple Salchow) 4.62
2A(Double Axel) 3.63

Based on the above facts if you calculate each of the skater’s Base score is
Yuna Kim: 61.82
Adelina Sotnikova: 63.26
Thus the difference in the Total Base Score is Only 1.44. But guys you have to know Adelina TWOfoot landed and had Wrong Edge the deduction should be made lol thus there would be almost should be 1 lol at least? BUT U KNW They give Adelina more points without deduction sis…

Also the Base Value is just an “expected execution score”, thus even if the skater had good component it does not guarantee that the skater would get the expected Base Value score so if the skater fails to execute the component properly the vase value score becomes meaningless .

Let’s compare the “Triple Luts jump (which has the highest difficulty and base value in both skaters)” of Yuna kim and Adelina Sotnikova’s.

Adelina Sotnikova’s Triple Luts jump had edge violation [Wrong Edge] where she executes a jump on the incorrect edge. It was a ‘cheating jump’ which it should have been judged as the wrong edge. In this circumstances it is normal to deduct 0.5~0.6 from the total score. Moreover, As she had Two foot landing while she was executing Double loop she needs to get another reduction!

Thus if we reflect this wrong edge the base value of two skaters we can see that there is almost no difference in between Yuna kim and Adelina Sotnikova’s base score. However Adelina Sotnikova did not get a wrong edge judgement, but got a higher execution score.

Furthermore If you take a look at the GOE you can Spot something is fishy especially for the SHORT program ! as well as the free program :S

Adeline was good, she was energetic, powerful, and wonderful. However I question that whether her performance was that great to give such as huge points on execution and execution and many other areas. Also, how could Adeline score only .11 away from Yuna Kim’s flawless world record breaking score of 2010? (I can describe Yuna’s performance in 2010 as perfect) I dont expect Olympic to be completely fair, because it is impossible, but this is just too much…

if you watched the women figure skatings, it is obvious that Yuna Kim’s Gold was robbed! Shame on Russia!

@lianas: Um one of the judges gave her a zero 0.0 and she didn’t even make a mistake. Now that is called a bias. to the EXTREME.
