Austin Mahone Urges Safe Driving with AllState's #GetThereSafe Campaign (JJJ Interview)

Austin Mahone is all about safe cruising this summer, the deadliest season for young drivers.

The 18-year-old singer, who is currently on the road for his first-ever headlining U.S. tour, caught up with JJJ about his partnership with The AllState Foundation.

The #GetThereSafe campaign challenges teens to demonstrate smart driving by not engaging in three risky behaviors that cause teen crash fatalities – speeding, failure to wear a seatbelt, and distractions caused by passengers in the car.

“I wanted to inform kids on why it’s important to drive safe because I’m a new teen driver as well, and these days it’s all about Twitter and Instagram, so I just wanted to let them know that it’s not worth it to check all that stuff while you’re driving,” Austin told JJJ. “Wait until you get to where you are to check all that because it’s actually the No. 1 cause of death for teens in America. It’s pretty scary.”

So what if you see your friend doing it? Austin says speak up! “If you see you’re friend trying to text and drive, take their phone! It’s not worth it.”

You have a chance to win a meet and greet with Austin at your school! Just upload photos of yourself or your destination with one of these hashtags #slowdown, #seatbelt and/or #nodistractions via the free #GetThereSafe app! Hurry, you only have until Friday, August 8!

Austin Mahone: It’s going great and I’m having a lot of fun. I can’t think of any crazy moments so far because it just started, but I’m just happy to be on tour with The Vamps, Fifth Harmony, and Shawn Mendes. It’s just a lot of fun and we’re having a good time.

JJJ: Do you guys get to hang out a lot in between shows?

AM: We have a ping pong table and a basketball hoop, so we’re always playing around and having a good time.

JJJ: Any pre-show rituals yet?

AM: We get into a group prayer and we all say a few words. And then we go out there and kill it. I drink a lot of water to stay hydrated and stuff. Nothing too crazy.

JJJ: What was the first thing you packed?

AM: Probably my keyboard.

JJJ: So you have new music in the works?

AM: Yeah, just working on some ideas I have.

JJJ: We saw that you were in the studio with Justin Bieber a few months ago. When will we find out more about that collaboration?

AM: It’s probably going to be a while. That was a new idea we were working on. It’s not anything big, so it might be a while to that comes out.

JJJ: Congrats on all your Teen Choice Award nominations! Is there a particular one you’re really hoping to win?

AM: There’s not one in particular, but it would be cool to go home with one.
