Check out this brand new interview with the talented Megan Nicole!
The 21-year-old singer just dropped her debut EP Escape and we already have it on repeat! She gave us some insight into what went into making this record.
“Escape means a few different things to me. It’s my escape from the traditional ways of doing things,” Megan told JJJ. “I went from being on a major label to releasing this EP on my own label. It’s also about escaping from everything I was told to be and finally finding myself. And this music is an escape for my fans. I hope as they listen to it they are able to connect with it in some way. ‘Escape’ was one of the more special songs to me on this album and it just made sense to title this first release that for those reasons.”

JustJaredJr.com: When you started writing for this album, did you have a specific vision in mind? What’s a typical songwriting session like for you?
Megan Nicole: Before I started the process of writing these songs I took a few months off. I recently had gotten out of a label where I was recording mostly dance music to being an independent artist with a fresh start. I listened to a lot of music and ended up going back to the route I initially wanted to do. Still pop, but a lot more band driven. There’s a little bit of rock and a sprinkle of that funk influence I got from listening to artists like Earth, Wind, and Fire. I teamed up with a producer I’ve been working with for a few years and we started with some rough tracks he made. We’d listen through them and when one would strike me we’d start working on the melody and build from there.

JJJ: A lot of young artists don’t always write their own songs. How important was it for you to be involved in the process?
MN: It was very important to me to be involved in the process. This would be the first body of original work that I would be putting out and I wanted it to reflect me and the artist I want to become. It makes it that much more rewarding to know not only the words I sang, but the words I wrote were able to touch someone. Whether it made them smile, helped them through a relationship, whatever it may be. It’s me communicating directly to my fans and listeners.
JJJ: We love “Electrified” and its pop dance vibe. What are some of your go-to pop songs from the 80s or 90s?
MN: Ooh there’s this one song by The Waitresses called “I Know What Boys Like” and it’s such a groovy, catchy, quirky song. “Rock with You” Michael Jackson, “Just Like Heaven” The Cure, “Escape (The Piña Colada)” song and more.
JJJ: Now that Taylor Swift has announced her album as 80s-influenced, we think you should team up! Would you be up for that?
MN: Yes! I really love her style and how she has evolved so gracefully over the years as an artist. She’s changing the game and showing what it means to be a pop star.
JJJ: Any plans for an upcoming tour?
MN: Yes, I can not wait to get out on the road again and start performing these new songs live! I love getting the chance to meet new people and share music with them.
JJJ: On your site, you list Netflix as a Friday night must-haves. What’s the last show you binge-watched?
MN: Bobs Burgers! I’m obsessed. I have to say, one of my best friends and then my sister tried to get me into it a while back and I just didn’t get it. I thought it was silly show. I gave it another try then never looked back. I love it so much I’m dressing up as Tina who’s a character on the show for Halloween and my sister is going to be Louise from the show.
JJJ: Last question! Because you’re a YouTube expert, we have to know – do you have your eye on any other upcoming YouTube artists these days? Who should we look out for?
MN: Bethany Mota recently shared her beautiful singing voice with us! She’ll be one to watch for new music.
