Maisie Williams Disagrees with Emma Watson's 'First-World Feminism' Views

Maisie Williams has seemingly made some waves after opening up about her own feminism views.

The 17-year-old Game of Thrones actress spoke with The Guardian about her take on the topic.

“There are creepy things that people say online that I shouldn’t have to read, but there are bigger things going on in other countries,” she said.

When asked about Emma Watson‘s recent UN speech, which she calls “first-world feminism,” Maisie said, “A lot of what Emma Watson spoke about, I just think, ‘that doesn’t bother me’. I know things aren’t perfect for women in the UK and in America, but there are women in the rest of the world who have it far worse.”

Emma’s speech was great and Maisie’s comment is ridiculous. I mean, so just because there are bigger issues in other parts of the world she thinks women from more developed countries should shut up about the inequalities that still exist?

I respect her concern for underdeveloped countries human conditions. But I don’t think she understood Emma’s speech and movement. Emma is not only fighting for women’s rights in the U.K. or the U.S. or any other developed nations, she is ultimately fighting for women’s rights in the world. And yes, there are more problems in the world but we can’t judge Emma for taking a stand for something she believes in. At least she is doing something.
