We caught up with Ava about her career, what she likes to do for fun, holiday plans, and more! Check it:
JustJaredJr: First of all, was your Girl Meets World character always named Ava or did they do that because it was your name as well?
Ava Kolker: Well, I initially auditioned to be young Maya (young Sabrina Carpenter) for an episode where she remembered when she was young. Then, they brought me back to audition for young Missy and then again for young Riley (Rowan Blanchard). Finally, they brought me back another time and I met the writers that time. They asked me a lot of questions, and then they created a new role to be Auggie’s girlfriend. I started the very next morning and they called the role Ava so they kept my name! I was very excited.

JJJ: What can you tell us about what’s coming up for Ava on the show?
AK: Well, you have to watch, but there continues to be a love hate relationship with Topanga but Auggie and Ava get closer and closer and eventually even get “married.” That is the cutest funniest episode. I can’t wait to watch that one.
JJJ: Who would you say is your closest friend on set?
AK: I think definitely August Maturo. We have so much fun together on set and in school.
JJJ: What’s been your favorite memory from filming so far?
AK: My song. I love singing “Look at me! I’m Aavaaa Morgensterrrrnnnnnnn, Yeah!” It’s always super fun to do my song.
JJJ: Tell us about your Miss Meadows character!
AK: I play Heather who is Miss Meadows’s favorite student when she is a substitute teacher. Heather asks a lot of questions and doesn’t like the world when her permanent teacher dies. But then, she learns to trust Miss Meadows and we get very close in the movie. Then, I get kidnapped so there is a very scary moment in the movie when Miss Meadows tries to save me. I can’t tell you the end, but that was probably the hardest scene I have had to do so far.
JJJ: Wow. What was it like working with Katie Holmes? Were you familiar with any of her work beforehand?
AK: I loved working with Katie Holmes. She really helped me with my lines and to show the right emotions, especially in the hard scenes. She was always very sweet to me, and gave me great advice to help me do the best job I could do. Plus I got to play with Suri, so that was really fun too. I didn’t really know of any of her work before I met her.
JJJ: What was your favorite memory from filming that movie?
AK: I filmed it in Cleveland and worked with Karen Hopkins, Barry Markowitz and Rob Carliner who I loved. My favorite memory was when Barry Markowitz helped me break my neck and made the noise with a water bottle. It was so funny. Other than that, the whole experience was really great, working with all the all the other kids in the school scenes and with Katie Holmes, I really learned a lot.
JJJ: What do you like to do for fun when you’re not working?
AK: I love spending time with my family, I am on a soccer league, I do musical theatre and just finished playing Jasmine in the play Aladdin Junior. I also like to play tennis, I like to ice skate and I love to sing and dance. I also love to play any sports and play with my 3 sisters, and my friends. I just like to be busy and active all the time.
JJJ: You recently had a birthday. Happy belated! How did you celebrate?
AK: Thank you. Yes, I just turned 8. My family took me to dinner at Ruth’s Chris and we are going to go to the snow over New Years Eve for a few days because that’s what I really wanted to do. I have never been to the snow so I am so excited to go there and learn to ski.
JJJ: Any fun holiday plans?
AK: Yes, we are going to Laguna Beach for Christmas for a few days. I love the beach and going to see the Christmas lights will be so fun. There is a boat parade that we are going to go see. It will be so beautiful.
