Jeff Bridges Says He Has 'Plenty Of Regrets' About 'Giver' Movie

The Giver movie was one that JJJ had looked forward in 2014 and we were disheartened when it really didn’t live up to what we read in Lois Lowry‘s book of the same name…and it looks like we weren’t alone.

Jeff Bridges, who played the title character, opened up about the film with HuffPo Live. Check out what he had to say:

“It was difficult because I love the book, you know, and I’d been through many, many scripts trying to get the book right, and I knew there were all these fans. And then finally Harvey Weinstein said, ‘Oh, I’ll make that,’ but I knew getting Harvey involved [meant] I was going to have to let go of my vision, because he had ideas,” he shared.

Jeff added about the casting of Brenton Thwaites as Jonas, “I came to a fork in the road when they said ‘yeah we’ll make this film, but this is the way we want to make it’, I could have said, ‘well, thank you very much, bon voyage, I’m not gonna do that with you’ or just kind of take an adventure and realize that it wasn’t gonna be exactly how I imagined it. I just decided to do it sort of as a spiritual exercise in letting go.”

billetdoux may not realize that Jeff’s original vision for The Giver was tragically impossible. He truly wanted to make this film in the mid-90′s with his father in the title role AND JB directing. Sadly, Lloyd Bridges’s 1998 passing put the film on indefinite hiatus until Jeff, nearly 20 years older, chose to play the role himself. For all that may have been changed from his vision, Jeff, Meryl, Brandon, Taylor, and the rest of the cast gave stellar performances, and the film is still something JB should be proud of.
