Vanessa Hudgens Opens Up About Zac Efron Relationship: 'Girls Were Running After Him'

Vanessa Hudgens breaks her longtime silence on her relationship with Zac Efron in this new interview.

The 26-year-old actress opened up to the New York Times about their relationship, and how her current boyfriend Austin Butler helped her get back into church.

On Zac: “I went through a phase when I was really mean because I was so fed up. Girls were running after him, and I was giving them death stares. Then I realized that’s not what that’s about. ‘Spread the love, be a good person, they support you, be nice.’”

On going to Catholic mass at Hillsong with Austin: “It feels like Arcade Fire — it’s epic like that. They really focus on you having your own personal relationship with Jesus, which is wonderful.”

On her spirituality: “I’m a definite hippie. I’m literally my happiest self when I’m dancing half naked on a grass field listening to Led Zeppelin.”

Actually Zac was just a small part in the whole interview. Is not like she’s finally opening up about their relationship..

She is really talking about changing herself . The way she used to feel while dating a famous actor and that she had to change herself to be kinder, more accepting and more tolerant. Seriously, not worth making a post about the one line she said. I do have to add they were the prettiest couple in existence, but what’s done is done. I do like who she is with now, she seems to have found peace and happiness in her life.

I think that’s exactly what she meant to convey; how difficult it was and how she grew as a result of the experience. And I agree- she seems very much at peace and is happy!

I guess these Entertainment news sites need hits so they go for the tantalizing title. JJ knows exactly what she meant . That is why it’s so frustrating for a person to be honest because they take it all out of the context and try and make a fake headline from it.

        • Maria

It’s too bad every entertainment site is running with this story, because it really was an innocent remark, more about herself, than it was about him. I think their breakup was so sudden and unexpected for a beloved couple, and any comment about the possible reasons for it, will make news. It’s a shame. I think they have BOTH been very private about those reasons, and that’s how it should be.

Actually I’m shocked just how much it was picked up on and by all the major news outlets. The fact is the article was about Vanessa and her new role in Gigi was overlooked by this one statement. With all the backlash and misunderstanding by people who do not read it’s a wonder she ever says anything. It’s also a shame because she was being so honest and instead of fans relating to how hard it was not to get upset and jealous they think it’s immature. Which is so far from what she was saying. She was trying to teach a lesson to others not to be that way and that she was human . She realized her bad attitude and deciding to let go of the negativity and embrace the love of them , which she still does to this day. I thought she handled dating a heartthrob so much better than any girl is expected to at that age or any age for that matter. Being honest doesn’t pay sometimes, but with her you have to admire that she says what she thinks and it true to herself. I also agree that both have remained private about the past and any little remark by either is always blown out of proportion.

Very true, IMO. Instead of an honest, teaching moment, we got whining over why she spoke of him, which Is a first, I believe. When this wound was fresh for her, I imagine she could not have admitted to the mean attitude, but time does heal most wounds, and now she could. Going back to that time, I never felt they broke up because they didn’t love each other; their friends, careers, and other issues got in the way. I think it’s very human for her to admit the constant fan girls were difficult to deal with, but that she had to learn to embrace them. I don’t imagine, though, we will ever know what happened, but I DO know, they will always be respectful of what they had with each other.

I agree with you 100% and it took a lot of guts to admit that and see the flaws in your younger self. But that comes with age and maturity . She seems to have found inner peace . I just hate that people are judging her for something that IMO was very minor and short lived. Because if you followed them as a couple you heard some rumblings about her being impatient and a little rude at the beginning and then she changed as she said and was then quite lovely to his fans.
It couldn’t have been that bad or a very small number of fans . We would have heard never ending stories about it and for the most part fans had great things to say about her and it’s only gotten better as she has gotten older. People forget she was a teenager when this happened and you can’t compare a teenaged girl and her emotions to a woman in her late 20′s.

I don’t understand how every time either Zac or Vanessa mentions each other in an interview for a quick second, that one line or section is what’s reported… Vanessa gave a wonderful and insightful interview to the New York Times, it’s a shame her past relationship, that has been over for years, is tagged as its punchline.
So happy for all her success regarding Gigi and the grounded woman she’s grown up to be – lets focus on that.

    • Maria

I agree. I respect her honesty about how she felt during that time. I always said it’s not easy to be the GF of a heartthrob.

Vanessa is brilliant in GiGi. Things are going great for and glad she’s happy with Austen.

Hillsong is not a Catholic church. It’s a Christian church. Vanessa was Catholic as a child. I truly wish people would stop confusing the two religions. (actually Christianity isn’t a “religion”, so….)
