We are more than pumped for Mikael’s return to the French Quarter in tonight’s episode of The Originals!

JJJ: A lot has happened in Mikael’s absence. Does he learn about Esther’s death and if so, what is his reaction?

SB: His sole purpose in the episode is to save Freya and destroy Dahlia. I don’t think death is ever final for any character in this world.

JJJ: Mikael has become a fan favorite, why do you think that is? What do you love most about playing this character?

SB: I think the fans love Mikael because he has so much authority and wields such unequivocal power over all the characters but there is also an underlying depth and sadness in him which the fans understand and seem to relate to, he has all the attributes of a tragic character. I love playing the different layers of pain that Mikael seems to manifest in fury, chaos and destruction but i also cherish the rare tender moments he has had with different members of his family throughout the years.

JJJ: It was recently announced that Nina Dobrev is leaving The Vampire Diaries. What are your thoughts on that?

SB: I think it’s wonderful, Nina has turned Elena into a seminal TV character and has garnered a legion of fans for her wonderful work, I think it very brave of her to embark on new adventures. And I love how thankful she has been for the experience to everyone involved, notably Julie Plec. I know Nina personally, she’s a smart, wonderful woman and I wish her the absolute best in her future endeavors.

JJJ: What else do you have in the works?

SB: I recently worked on Once upon a Time and am heading to New York city at the end of the month for the premiere of this wonderful movie I’m in and that I’m very proud of called Phantom Halo with Thomas Sangster, Luke Kleintank, and Rebecca Romjin. I’m very excited about this film.
