Meryl Davis is Excited to See Her 'DWTS' Family During Anniversary Special (Exclusive Interview!)

Tonight marks the highly-anticipated Dancing With The Stars 10th Anniversary Special and JJJ couldn’t be more excited for it!

We exclusively spoke with Meryl Davis, the winner of Season 18, about returning for the special, what being on the show meant to her, and more. Check it:

JustJaredJr.com: What were some of your favorite moments on the show?

It’s so tough to pick! From rehearsals to the energy surrounding the set on show days, what an incredible experience overall! Still, I think my favorite memories are of performing on Monday nights. One of the happy similarities between skating and dancing is the ability to express one’s self. Movement, costuming and beautiful music are all a part of creating moments and I certainly loved my opportunity to do that on such an incredible show.

JJJ: Can you pick your favorite dance?

MD: I think my favorite dance at the time had to be our freestyle; I really felt like the dance was a culmination of our journey on the show and was very special to perform. In retrospect, I’ve gained new appreciation for some of our other dances as we’ve revisited them for other performances. Our foxtrot, rumba and tangos stand out to me.

JJJ: What has the show meant to you?

MD: The show was an experience unlike any other. I really had the time of my life being a part of season 18 and felt as though I learned a lot about myself throughout the course of the season. After talking to a lot of the other former contestants who returned for the 10th anniversary special, I know I’m not alone in having enjoyed the experience so much.

JJJ: Looking back, what made you want to join in the first place?

MD: I believe Charlie [White] and I received our offer to do the show the day after our win in Sochi. We’d just achieved a dream that had been years in the making and it was time for a major dance party!

JJJ: What’s one thing that you would want to say to your partner now?

MD: Well, Maks [Chmerkovskiy] and I have stayed good friends so I don’t feel like there’s really anything unsaid. I think a big ‘thank you’ for making my experience so memorable comes up in conversation often.

JJJ: If you could do it all again, would you?

MD: I feel like our season felt so complete and like that chapter ended so beautifully. Of course, I am always thrilled to return to the show and love being a part of the Dancing with the Stars family anytime I get the chance.

JJJ: Are you watching the show now? Who are you rooting for?

MD: I’m on the road so much that I often have to YouTube people’s dances a few days after they air. I’m pretty torn at the moment as I’m really enjoying several teams. Being friends with so many people on the show makes it tough to make a call, too!

JJJ: What are you most excited about for the anniversary special?

MD: The show really does feel like a family. Returning to the ballroom and seeing people I’d become close with was fun, but I also loved seeing contestants and pros I hadn’t met before. Much like the Olympic family, you don’t have to know people within the family to feel connected in a special way.

    • CathyAnn

      • Sara

Just saw the show! Their Tango-Paso Fusion was awesome! The whole show was fantastic! Especialy the group number at the end that had everyone in!

      • ebc248

They’ve still got that magic dance connection! Paso Fusion was awesome!

      • LisaL

Such a great show! Just wish it would have been longer! One hour was not enough to cover twenty seasons.

    • Guest

Best DWTS couple! So nice they have kept up their friendship!
Hope Derek & Maks heal up soon from their injuries, :)

      • Vicky

Meryl and Maks dancing is so beautiful and intense!
and Alfonso & Witney are amazing! Love these Mirrorball Champs!

      • Carmela

Loved seeing Mellisa Rycroft & Tony Dovoloni dance again! Maybe he will do the DWTS tour since she will be hosting it.

  • Vicky

Love that we get to see Meryl & Maks and Alphonso & Witney dance the Paso! Love these dance pairs!

    • guest

LOL, And all the football players are dancing again, too! They are so hot!

      • EmmaLovesZak

So glad Karina and Anna were back to dance! Love them!

        • Betsy Ross

I think that Karina is the best female pro dancer that DWTS ever had. I wonder if she will be back next season. It doesn’t seem like she is doing much. I know the book that she wrote flopped, so she may be back.

          • el7jake

            Book? What book?

        • Guest

Just wish Derek and Cheryl could have been there! Glad they showed there past dances.

        • Carmela

So glad that Louis Van Amstel was there! He, Chelsie Hightower, Maks & Sharna Burgess danced in the dance/skating show with Meryl & Charlie!

    • AnyaG

      They just make me smile!

  • Betsy Ross

Just saw the special. Not impressed. On youtube you can see different dances put together that are better than what was showed tonight. The dance between Meryl and Maks was different. It was good, but you could see that neither of them were connected with the other like during season 18. And Maks having to make those faces (mugging) at the camera took away a bit of the feel of dance. Nice to see he still has a healthy attitude about himself, to put it nicely.

    • el7jake

You know, I noticed that the connection that they had had during season 18 seemed to be missing, and I can’t tell you how disappointing that was. Both have said that they are still close friends, but you sure couldn’t see it tonight. Meryl seemed very cold and distant somehow. I loved the NFL section; that was hilarious, but where was Jason Taylor? We don’t have to ask where Warren Sapp was…. I would have loved to have seen more of the former pros: Edyta, Dmitry, Lacey, Chery, Tristan. And where was Kym Johnson? And I know that he is considered an important part of DWTS, but I didn’t miss Derek Hough not being there at all!

      • Betsy Ross

Yeah, I mean the MnM dance was good, but I don’t know, it just seemed like they were off with each other. I know that they are dating other people and don’t expect them to hang on each other, but the spark was not there. I felt there was a little bit of indifference on both their parts. Oh well, as I said it was good, but perhaps could have been better. The whole show itself seemed too fast paced and I think the editing in parts were bad. For me, Patti LaBelle brought the house down. She was the best part and not even a dancer.

  • Cindi

Wow! What a spectacular show! Loved seeing everyone dance!

    • Kendal24

So much fun seeing Alfonso & Witney dance! Meryl and Maks were amazing! The group dances were fantastic!

  • JeanieBeanz

I so enjoyed the section on dancers that inspired everyone! Loved seeing Amy Purdy & JR Martnez! Loved the dance off with Meryl & Maks and Alfonso & Witney! Easy to see why they are champions!

    • guest

Watching Amy walk to her dad, that made tears come to my eyes!

    • Carmela

LOL, saw a little behind the scenes clip of Maks & Alfonso doing the “Carleton”, while Meryl & Witney laughed & did the “Bump”, they all looked like they were just having so much fun!

      • AnyaG

I saw that too, you could tell everyone happy to be there celebrating! Every contestant talked about how much they loved being on the show!

  • EmmaLovesZak

What a great celebration! I liked the judges picks of their all-time favorite dances! and the clips showing people who couldn’t be there, like Cheryl!

    • Guest

Just loved seeing so many of my past favorites back in the ballroom! This could have easily been a 2 hour show!

  • Guest

Meryl & Charlie were my all time favorites!

    • Guest

LOL, they showed the clip from Mary Poppins, when Charlie dropped the cane! He’s so adorable!

    • Guest

LOL, they showed the clip from Mary Poppins, when Charlie dropped the cane! He’s so adorable!

  • AnyaG

Meryl & Maks are still Dance Magic! All of the numbers were amazing! Loved the number with Mark & Kristi Y, Amy Purdy, and Maria Menunous, just wish Derek could have been there!

    • LisaL

Loved the number with Mark & all the ladies, just wish Derek could have been there, hope he’s healing well.

  • ebc248

The Anniversary Special was amazing! So much talent!

    • Vicky

Loved everything from the costumes and sets, the film clips and all the great dancing!

    • Guest

I thought the whole production was magnificent. I love how they included everyone who wasn’t there by showing clips! The dancing and choreography were first rate!

    • Carmela

Everybody there looked like they were having a blast! It reminded me of a New Years Party! I wanted to be there dancing, lol.

  • Guest

LOL, I thought those holograms were awesome! Steve W doing the worm ;)

  • guest

Have to say the Football Paso was my favorite! Those boys can dance!

    • LisaL

True! and when the show first started I never expected that a these huge football players could be so light on there feet! Some of the best dancers that the show has had!

  • Babs 984

Unfortunately, either Meryl or Maks or both did not click with one another to further find out if they had any kind of romantic relationship, other than friends. Understanding that it would be strictly business with them and nothing else. Contracts are drawn up and no one talks about their “true” feeling or romances with their dancing partners. Max talks a lot about their relationship during the show but, it is just for public consumption regarding DWTS. If he had any kind of thoughts about a romantic relationship with her, it would have happened after the show was over. He is now back with Peta who he dated a while back. Heck, he could have been with her during the show. She and him have a lot in common and run with the same professional people all of the time. Those who watch the show will never know the exact relationship between them because of the contract she signed.
Everyone hopes and DWTS hypes romances that were never going to happen from the beginning or the two dancers never had any thought of a romantic relationship. I enjoyed the ride with Meryl and Maks but, it is just a fantastic show and not much more. His lifestyle was so opposite of her lifestyle. He is a dater of many women and Meryl knew better than to get involved with him.
When they got together for the reunion, there was not much eye contact nor kissing and hugging involved. It felt so different than the 3 months they were together. Nothing was going on and nothing will happen with them in the future. We can only wish but, sometimes wishes never just never come ture.
