Raini Rodriguez Exclusively Chats With JJJ About 'When Marnie Was There' - Get A Recap Of Our Twitter Chat Here!
The 21-year-old actress chatted with us over Twitter about the Studio Ghibli flick, which is out in New York and Los Angeles TODAY.
Check out what Raini spilled about her character, the lesson and more — psst, she even opened up about what’s next for her and it involves in music and directing! Yay!
On how excited she is for the movie: So excited! This was my first Japanese to English animated film. I loved the script the first time I read it! It’s great :)
On her character in the film: I play Nobuko. She’s like the towns popular girl who has a lot of energy and talks really fast, although she can be sassy too. She tries and fails, but eventually becomes friends with Anna, Hailee Steinfields character.
On the appeal of When Marnie Was There: I’ve never done an animated film like this before. The film has already been done in Japanese and I was brought in to do the English voice. It was cool cause normally you have to start from scratch with imagining your character. But I got to watch Nobuko on screen and match my words to her mouth movements. It was new, but really fun!
On her favorite scene or line from the movie: Nobuko is always in charge of the other kids in their town, so there’s a scene where she’s telling everyone what to do. I basically backed up from the microphone in the booth & pretended I was bossing my brothers around, telling them what to do!

On the lesson the audience will learn: For Nobuko, it’s about friendship and acceptance. For the entire film, don’t be afraid to be adventurous and yourself.
On the best thing about doing voice work: Its really fun to do voice work because your in charge of just using your voice to create a character!
On if she met any of her co-stars during filming: No! When you record, you normally don’t see the other cast members in the booth. Though I know a lot of the people in the movie. I was actually the first cast member to record this movie :)
On her hair secrets: So many! I only wash it every other day, I use Deva Curl & It’s a 10 spray when I get out of the shower. Don’t brush it too!
On her summer plans: To work on directing and music more. I’m excited to share with everyone some projects I’ve been working on too :)
On if those summer plans involve music in any way: YES! I’ve been slacking on posting cover songs but I’ll start posting small vine or Instagram ones
On her character name if she was in Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood” music video: Oooo! Rainstorm!… Yes yes! Super powers are a must!!
On the funniest prank she’s ever pulled: Anytime I scare @CalumWorthy I call it a successful day. It brings me so much joy. [It's] not so much how high did he jump, but more how loud he screamed.
On what’s coming up on Austin & Ally: Well Austin can’t perform and Ally’s career is at a high so we’ll see the gang deal with that and of course Trish is still doing crazy jobs while managing and we have some guest stars coming up that I’m REALLY excited about. Funny stuff coming!!
On if she could re-do one episode: Probably none of them. Because you can see us as actors & characters get stronger with every episode we filmed & I love that. No I lied!!! The last one, because we could keep messing up and never have to leave hahah
On the best thing about going back to Texas: I love being out in the country and cooking BBQ with my family while we just joke around and laugh. My family is the BEST!
When Marnie Was There centers on shy, artistic Anna, who moves to the seaside to live with her aunt and uncle. There, she stumbles upon an old mansion surrounded by marshes, and the mysterious young girl, Marnie, who lives there. The two girls instantly form a unique connection and friendship that blurs the lines between fantasy and reality. As the days go by, a nearly magnetic pull draws Anna back to the Marsh House again and again, and she begins to piece together the truth surrounding her strange new friend.
