Hudson Thames Loves the Support From Taylor Swift! (JJJ Interview)

If you haven’t already heard of Hudson Thames, take note now!

JustJaredJr.com recently caught up with the talented singer/songwriter to chat about his upcoming EP, his “How I Want Ya” collaboration with Hailee Steinfeld, and more.

Not to mention, Taylor Swift just listed “How I Want Ya” as one of her favorite “new songs that will make your life more awesome.”

“It was crazy. It’s crazy she continues to go out of her way to support not not only musicians, but music as a whole,” Hudson told JJJ about being included on her list. “Also, just hearing she genuinely digs the song was very validating.”

JustJaredJr.com: You are busy working on your EP. How’s that going? When can we expect it?

Hudson Thames: It’s going really well. We actually just finished mastering it so it should be out on November 6.

JJJ: What’s your songwriting process like? Take us through a typical session!

HT: The two constant things are my songs always have to come from a real life experience, and usually start with me jamming on the piano. As far as writing with other people though, it’s always different. For example, I just got back from an ASCAP writing retreat in France where we wrote all of the songs in a 12th century castle in the middle of nowhere- settings always change.

JJJ: Who are your biggest musical influences?

HT: My dad is my biggest musical influence. He’s an amazing blues piano player from Mississippi and he taught me how to accompany myself. Other than that; Bill Withers, Phoenix, Bruno Mars, to name a few.

JJJ: How did the collaboration with Hailee Steinfeld come about?

HT: The story of this song has a pretty unusual path. The label reached out saying they had a hook/chorus that they thought was fantastic but they hadn’t been able to find verses they were happy with. So I sat down and banged out a couple verses and sent over a track an hour later. I didn’t think about it again until I was asked about using it on the show Grey’s Anatomy. The song kinda took on a life of it’s own and somehow Hailee heard it, really dug it, and wanted to collaborate. After she recorded her part we found out we have like a bunch of mutual family friends and it’s pretty crazy that we’ve never met.

JJJ: Tell us more about “How I Want Ya” and the meaning behind it.

HT: “How I Want Ya” is kind of my version of “Play No Games” by Big Sean (laughs). It’s basically saying, “I’m into you, are you into me? Let’s just be honest.”

JJJ: What are your favorite songs at the moment?

HT:
Tory Lanez- “Say it”
Ed Sheehan- “Bloodstream”
Babyface – “We Got Love”
The Game (feat. Drake) – “100″
Gallant – “Weight in Gold”

JJJ: What’s your go-to karaoke song?

HT: “Drops of Jupiter” (laughs) [by Train]. I don’t know why, but since I was like 10, that’s been it.

JJJ: Describe you and your music in three words.

HT: Surf AND Soul.
