Zendaya & Rachel Platten Turn To Cher & Salt-N-Pepa For Guidance In 'Girl Crush' Feature for Paper Mag

The two singers had the chance to talk with their Girl Crushes — Cher and Salt-N-Pepa — about fashion, taking risks and balancing everything.

“Just looking at all the things you’ve done on red carpets � my stylist and I kind of stalk you a little bit � you were creating these moments, and you were breaking down barriers so that pop stars and even people like me could go out on a red carpet [and do something more dramatic], and people understand it and get the individuality of it,” Zendaya, 19, told Cher, 69.

Cher replied, “You want to be accepted, but you don’t want to play it so safe that you don’t take chances and you don’t express yourself. It’s not bullshit to express yourself in the way you want to, and it helps girls to not be afraid to express themselves. I think you’re a really good role model. Wardrobe is a simple thing, but you have to be free to express yourself. You can’t be constricted.”

“I go out there and I wear what I want to wear, with nobody in mind but how I feel when I leave the house,” Zendaya added.

Rachel turned to the R&B Hip Hop duo about balance.

“Dude, how do you do it? The other thing I’m struggling with is my time and how to say ‘no.’ I’m so drained a lot of the time now. But I want to give everything I have and I think that’s a really tough thing to navigate,” she confessed.

Pepa told her, “After a while, you have to [say 'no'] and people have to understand what you’re doing in your work. It’s still tough — right, Cheryl?”

Salt added, “Yes, girl. Being an artist is a sacrifice. It’s a great life — I wouldn’t want to do anything else — and it’s glamorous and it’s fun but it’s a sacrifice.”

“It’s a good way to put it — it is a sacrifice but I get to do what I love. How lucky are we?” Rachel said.
