Sam Smith Gets Response from Ian McKellen After Oscars Win

Sam Smith poses with “Writing’s On the Wall” co-writer Jimmy Napes while attending the 2016 Vanity Fair Oscar Party held at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts on Sunday (February 28) in Beverly Hills, Calif.

The 23-year-old got a response from Ian McKellen after he gave a shout-out to the actor in his acceptance speech at the awards show.

Sam won the award for Best Original Song and said that Ian once mentioned that no openly gay man has won an Oscar before and he’s proud to be the first.

This statement is untrue as Dustin Lance Black won an Oscar back in 2009 for writing the movie Milk and he called the singer out for the mistake.

“I’d said no openly gay actor had received #Oscars – that doesn’t detract from @samsmithworld achievement. Congratulations to him & all others!” Ian said to clarify that he was only speaking of actors.
