Gracie Gold Says She's Ashamed Of Her Worlds 2016 Performance

Gracie Gold stuns on the ice in a red hot costume during the Ladie’s Free Program at the 2016 World Figure Skating Championships held at TD Garden on Saturday night (April 2) in Boston, Mass.

“Obviously I’m really embarrassed and I’m really ashamed with how I’m skated,” the 20-year-old athlete shared after her performance, which left her in 4th place after the competition ended.

Gracie added, “It was just one of those really, really tragic skates that you feel like you can’t do anything right. I feel really sorry for Boston and for the United States that I let them down when they needed me most.”

When asked about her Olympic shots for the 2018 games, Gracie shared, “It’s appearing less and less likely that that’s in my cards, but of course I’ll keep trying and training hard. I am in the top in the world. I still have hopes for (the 2018 Olympics) and 2018 podium. … I have potential, it just has to happen at the right time.”

Gold’s legacy thus far is kind of tragic. She is by far one of the most physically beautiful female skaters ever. But her inability to sustain a lead and choking under pressure seems to be a pattern she cannot break. Time is running out. Last night’s Women’s World Figure skating competition was one of the worst I have seen the last 30 years. Paulina Edmonds could have EASILY won. Here’s hoping she is uninjured next year.

You can’t be serious! Medvedeva’s score was record-setting and Gracie Gold’s overall score would have WON the 2015 World’s!

The crowd and the judges beg to disagree.

I think the 2016 Women’s World finals was wonderful. Any competition where there are several strong, clean (or nearly clean) performances at the top of the leader board in the long program, under such great pressure, and, especially when the Short Program scores were bunched pretty closely together , creates excitement and drama. The gold, silver , and bronze medalists last night all had stellar performances, as did several other ladies. Gracie Gold belongs among the best. Many top world level senior skaters have struggled with nerves and disappointing finishes for several years before having their shining moment. Gracie just needs to have confidence in herself, and continue to work on developing her musical and artistic expression which is now coming along. Her technique is excellent. She needs to stop worrying so much about winning gold medals because this interferes with her execution . If she can just relax out there, get into the music, entertain the crowd, enjoy herself, and remember that she already is a great champion, she will do fine. What does she have to lose by changing her mindset? She has already experienced the anguish of experiencing so much pressure , both self imposed and imposed by others, and falling short of what she knows she can do.

    She’s too hard on herself.
