Taylor Swift to Be Honored With Taylor Swift Award

Taylor Swift is set to become the first ever winner of the Taylor Swift Award.

The 26-year-old singer will receive the honor on May 10 at the BMI (Broadcast Music, Inc.) Pop Awards Beverly Hills, Calif.

Taylor Swift has transformed pop culture through her songs, artistry and indomitable spirit,” BMI Vice President of Writer/Publisher Relations Barbara Cane said in a statement.

She added, “She has had a profound impact, not only musically, but also through her personal conviction and commitment to create a standard that values and respects music for everyone. We felt it appropriate to award Taylor with an honor that is as unique and special as she is.”

BMI has awarded only one similar honor when it gave the Michael Jackson Award to Michael Jackson in 1990.

As if her ego wasn’t big enough…

I’ve got to say… This is an outrage. There are so many other more deserving candidates for such an award. Besides, you cannot put Taylor Swift and Michael Jackson in the same category – Michael Jackson completely redefined the landscape of pop in his time, and even beyond his time. Taylor is more a conglomerate than a human being; she is not, as all the hype drummed up for her would suggest, an innovator or great musical talent. In fact, she is a thinly veiled Britney Spears of the present generation. Look at her 1989 album – most of the songs are so basic in melodic structure that they only require a handful of notes (sometimes even one or two repeated notes) to play them on an instrument or sing them.

It is a real travesty when true artistry that exists out there (with or without mass publicity) is not given proper credit or the big accolades within the industry. That’s today’s music industry for you – one giant sham that places a robotic female puppet on a pedestal for the teeny bopper market to bow down to, rather than promoting real talent.
