The 17-year-old musician opens up about his rumored romance with Camila Cabello, new music and more. Check it:
On young stars getting caught up in partying and how he keeps it together: “Drugs and stuff scare the s***out of me. I’m not just saying that. I have a thing where if I’m not in control, I feel the whole world is about to collapse. So it’s just not worth it.”
On his next album: “It’s a mix of pop and like a John Mayer–and–Ed Sheeran acoustic feel all in one. My friends and I think John Mayer is this music god who we’ve grown up learning from… I’m going to keep writing until I feel I’m ready to release the album. I have songs about growing up, about ex-relationships—ex-relationship, I should say. I haven’t had relationships. A couple of songs about relationships with girls since fame.”
On whether he’s dating Fifth Harmony’s Camila Cabello: “She’s phenomenal. I love her. And she’s so talented. She’s one of the sweetest girls I’ve ever met and super, super-smart. We aren’t dating, but musically she just blows my mind.”
On whether he stresses about making his success last: “Absolutely. That’s the big thing that has hit me lately. It’s all come together, but it’s hard for me to just say, “Wow, this is amazing—I’m famous. I’m living the dream!” I sit there and think, I’m scared—this can go away tomorrow… My dad always says that I’m a tortured soul because I’m never pleased; I never feel like I deserve what I’ve achieved.”
