It Took Alycia Debnam-Carey Three Years For Her To Fully Like Los Angeles

Alycia Debnam-Carey glams up for the 2016 Australians In Film Heath Ledger Scholarship Dinner on Wednesday evening (June 1) in Beverly Hills, Calif.

The 22-year-old Aussie actress is featured in the new issue of Vogue Australia and opened up with the glossy about the one role she’s glad she didn’t get, the LA life and more. Check it:

On being in Los Angeles: “I hated LA when I first got there. It took about three years for me to like it. LA and America, in general, have this incredible hustle about them. There’s this sense of momentum. In LA, it’s not on the surface. Everything is in the cracks. The restaurant out front will look like this old, boring place and you’ll go inside and it’s this lush, beautifully designed restaurant.”

On red carpet events: “It’s just a whole different world I’ve been exposed to too, where suddenly publicity matters and styling matters and how you present yourself matters, what you say and how you use social media, it’s a huge platform. [The events are] usually a stressful experience … I don’t really have much of a hang of it. My whole philosophy has been to let the work speak for itself, because that’s really what you want to show … But it is completely its own complex world now.”

On not getting the lead role in The Carrie Diaries: “I like that I didn’t do it, because when I was younger I could get that white-knuckle grip of holding onto an idea and not wanting to let it go, but the moment I started to let go and seeing that there are no rules, there’s more flexibility and openness and knowing that if you follow something it creates its own path.”
