Don't Buy Blue Tang Fish Like Dory!

Don't Buy Blue Tang Fish Like Dory!

Now that the highly anticipated movie Finding Dory has hit theaters, it is widely expected that people will flock into stores to stock their home aquariums with Blue Tang fish like the beloved character.

You should buy Dory toys and dolls rather than the actual fish though, as the species is not meant for living in homes.

The Blue Tang, also known as the palette surgeonfish, are not bred in captivity so the demand for the fish could cause a major decrease of the wild population.

“My understanding is that palette surgeonfish are difficult to breed in captivity, which means many of the fish in shops will be collected from the wild,” Alastair Harborne, the Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences at Florida International University, said in a statement (via Phys.org). “This obviously decreases their populations and may damage the reef as collectors use nets to catch the fish.”
