Asa Butterfield Relates A Lot To His 'Miss Peregrine' Character Jacob
Asa Butterfield turns into a real live bat in this inside shot from the new issue of Schon magazine.
The 19-year-old actor, who stars in Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, opens up about the film, connecting with characters and more. Check it:
On making connections with his movie characters: “I find the characters which are the most interesting, or most relatable are the ones that have their own kind of issue or problem that they are dealing with. Whether they are the same ones that you are dealing with or not, it allows you to kind of empathise with the character.”
On relating to Jacob in Miss Peregrine: “[He's] taken out of his comfort zone. He’s kicked out of his home and is taken to a children’s home. He’s totally out of place; in the deep end. Me, growing up in this industry, thrown into this world which, when I started, I knew very little about I’m still trying to grasp it all. I think actors are some of the most empathetic people because they have to put themselves in positions where they feel uncomfortable or they’ve got to deal with something terrible. That really allows you to feel for people in the real world who are going through struggles and are having a tough time.”
On working with Tim Burton: “There were a lot of moments where we would do a take, get the scene right, and then he would come up to me and say, ‘Now just do whatever you want; forget everything I’ve said and do your own thing.’ Firstly, that makes you, as an actor, feel like he trusts your take on it which, when you’re working with a director like Tim, means a lot. It also kind of gets rid of the pressure and gives the ability to take a deep breath, to start again, and to do something different.”
