The 20-year-old Spider-Man: Homecoming actors opened up about staying normal in the spotlight, and their roles in the film.
Zendaya on staying normal while other Disney stars went off the tracks: “Everybody’s normal. The only difference is they’re living out what would happen to a normal teenager in front of everybody, which is hard because you have people judging you before you even know who you are yet.”
Tom, on finding out he was cast as Spider-Man through Instagram: “I was in my bed scrolling through Instagram. It had been about a month since my audition. And Marvel just posted a photo saying go to our website and find out who the next Spider-Man is. I went on the Marvel website on my computer and there it was: The new Spider-Man is Tom Holland. I went ballistic, like absolutely nuts.”
Zendaya on the controversy surrounding an African-American Mary Jane: “People are going to react over anything…But of course there’s going to be outrage over that because for some reason some people just aren’t ready. I’m like, ‘I don’t know what America you live in, but from what I see when I walk outside my streets of New York right now, I see lots of diversity and I see the real world and it’s beautiful, and that’s what should be reflected and that’s what is reflected so you’re just going to have to get over it.’”
THR‘s Next Gen Talent list also includes Ansel Elgort, Suki Waterhouse, Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Alex Wolff, Thomas Mann, RJ Cyler, Lakeith Stanfield, Justice Smith, Awkwafina, Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe, Tony Revolori, Zoey Deutch, Glen Powell, Alexandra Shipp, Nick Robinson, Anya Taylor-Joy, Shameik Moore and Kiersey Clemons.
