Rowan Blanchard Opens Up About Leaving Disney, How She Became Politically Aware & Her New Movie

Rowan Blanchard is the cover story for NYLON magazine’s Young Hollywood Issue.

In the interview, Ro is refreshingly honest about how she came to be who she is, how she feels about not being on the Disney Channel any more and what she thinks aobut Taylor Swift not speaking up during the 2016 Presidential election.

On who she credits for her developing feminism and politic awareness: “I really owe everything that I do to teenagers on Tumblr who were considerate enough to teach other people about things -� not like the Susan B. Anthonys, but, like, Adrienne Rich and Angela Davis.”

On how she doesn’t feel pressure to dramatically change her image now that she’s not on the Disney Channel: “I knew the show would end someday, and I didn’t want there to be this weird part where it was like, good girl, good girl, good girl, and then, all of a sudden, bam, she’s going to show her boobs.”

On how proud she is to be cast in her upcoming movie, A Wrinkle in Time: “To be validated like that was very assuring. People hesitate to see me because I was on the Disney Channel and it’s fake acting or whatever.”
