It deals with depression, suicide, rape…everything we should be talking about in terms of how to deal and how to help. However, some viewers aren’t huge fans because of the triggers that it sets off.
A “trigger” can be anything really which can cause (an event or situation) to happen or exist, and in this case, it can give any viewer a flashback of a dark time and prompt them to return to that same situation.
One mental health organization called Headspace is opening up the conversation about the Netflix series’ graphic scenes and subjects.
“We need to talk more about youth suicide, but there’s a way of doing that and a way we can raise those concerns and have a range of awareness,” Kristen Douglas, national manager of Headspace school support says. “But we need to steer clear of really dangerous things like method, or oversimplifying it to one thing like bullying.”
