Carly Rae Jepsen Had No Idea 'Call Me Maybe' Would Be a Hit

Carly Rae Jepsen had no idea of the ineffable, bouncy power of “Call Me Maybe” when she first recorded the song.

“I’d be lying to say that I knew the song was going to be a career-changer for me,” the singer told Billboard (who voted “Hey I just met you/And this is crazy/So here’s my number/So call me maybe” the century‘s best chorus) in an interview, though she did notice that people seemed to react to it more than her other songs.

Once the song did become the sugary pop-hit we all know and adore, she had a very different fear. “There’s this terrifying feeling of, ‘Oh god, what if that’s the only music that I create?” she explained, “‘What if it defines the genre of what I do from now on?’”

Fortunately, that hasn’t been the case, and Carly has been able to propel the popularity of “Call Me Maybe” into a powerful freedom to pursue her own musical interests.

“It’s a gift to have a song like that because it’s allowed me now to start to be able to make, without sacrifice or compromise, the exact music that I’ve always dreamed of making,” she finished.

It turns out writing the century’s best chorus has some perks.
