Sofia Carson Talks What it's Like to Play a Villain Instead of a Princess

In a new interview, Descendants 2 star Sofia Carson opened up about what it’s like to play a villain instead of a princess — and why it’s not as black-and-white as it seems.

“I grew up dressed like a Disney princess,” she told Harper’s Bazaar, “I knew all the songs and I would sing them all day long.”

Still, she found playing a villain (she plays Evie, the Evil Queen’s daughter in Descendants 2) to be an interesting challenge, especially because it made her recognize that there’s good and bad in everyone.

“It’s cool because in playing Evie, a villain, you learn that really people aren’t bad; they make bad decisions or bad choices,” Sofia explained. “The story of the Villain Kids is that they can choose to be good. That’s the beauty about it. They are so human and they’ve made their mistakes and they continue to make mistakes; but they teach us all that matters at the end of the day is loving yourself and never being ashamed.”

Descendants 2 is such a cool film because it highlights the humanity even in “villains,” and the reality that, as humans, we have the power to decide who we are going to be.
