Princess Charlotte of Wales

Who she is: No, not THAT Princess Charlotte (of Cambridge) — we mean of Wales!

Princess Charlotte has a really sad story, to be honest. She was the only child of George, Prince of Wales and Caroline of Brunswick, and put right in the middle of her parents divorce.

They disliked each other so much — from even before their arranged marriage — and right after Charlotte was born, they separated. The Prince of Wales left most of Charlotte’s care to governesses and servants, but only allowed her limited contact with Caroline, who eventually left the country.

As Charlotte grew up, despite her father not being involved at all in her life, he was pressuring her to marry William, Hereditary Prince of Orange (and later King of the Netherlands), but it wasn’t to be.

George finally said yes to her marrying Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld (later, King of the Belgians) — but this didn’t last either. After only a year and a half of a happy union, Charlotte died after delivering a stillborn son.

See, we told you, sad!

(JJJ note: But it does have a sweet spot. Leopold, after he remarried, named his first daughter Charlotte after her).
