10 Female Rulers Who Need Their Own Shows Just Like Reign

Joanna of Castile, called Joan the Mad

Who she is: Joanna was such a cool ruler, you know, before she was declared “mad”. She was the third child of Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon and incredibly smart. She aced court life, knew all of the romance languages that you can name, and excelled in her studies, consisting of mathematics, philosophy, and civil law.

However, after her elder sister’s death, and nephew’s, Joanna was now the heiress to the Spanish kingdoms. Except, her dad, Ferdinand, told everyone that she was “ill” and “mad”, resulting in him being appointed her guardian and regent over the kingdom, instead of her.

It gets even better — her husband, Philip of Flanders, did the SAME THING!

She was truly swindled out of her own right as a queen.

In truth, Joanna may or may not have had a mental illness — some cite that it was because of her religious views that were opposite of her family’s and caused strain. But nothing really has been proven at all.

You know Leonor, the Princess of Asturias that JJJ loves, well, her title originates with Joanna.
