Incredible: Cody Simpson Appointed First Ocean Advocate for the United Nations -- Video Inside

Cody Simpson is having an incredible day. Today marks the first time anyone has ever been appointed an Ocean Advocate for the United Nations Development Programme.

“What an unreal day. It’s an honor to be appointed the first @UNDP Ocean Advocate,” Cody posted on Instagram this afternoon. “I’m looking forward to getting involved in all of their noble efforts to clean up our planet.”

The ocean has always been something the 20-year-old Australian native has been drawn too. Being both a former competitive swimmer and a surfer, Cody‘s love of the water has turned into a life-changing passion project.

“I have been a lover of the sea ever since I can remember. I think I learned how to swim before I could walk,” Cody says in a video posted this afternoon by the United Nations. “I guess over the course of time, I started to open up to a lot of the issues surrounding the oceans.”

He continued, “From my personal experience, being out in the water and seeing plastics floating around and thinking they are jellyfish and realizing they’re plastic bags. I’m always that guy that will take it into the shore. That passion grew over time as I grew older and became more aware of what was going on around me.”

Thursday, June 8, is World Oceans Day. See what you can do to help here.
