Brec Bassinger Opens Up About How She Found Out She Had Type 1 Diabetes

Brec Bassinger has been an advocate for Type 1 Diabetes since we can remember and the story of how she was diagnosed is touching and inspiring all at once.

The Status Update actress found out she had the condition at just eight-years-old, during a weekend girls’ getaway with her mom and grandmother in Texas.

“I was very moody, very thirsty, and I’d lost a lot of weight very fast,” Brec shared with YSBNow.

Once her parents realized that her symptoms could be diabetes, they headed to the doctors.

“I didn’t really understand what was going on, but I could tell my parents were worried,” she adds. “I was old enough to realize it was a big deal and something was changing.”

Brec‘s life changed in an instant after her diagnosis and it wasn’t until she found out that Nick Jonas also had diabetes that she decided to be open about it all.

“My mom brought this article about Nick Jonas having Type 1 Diabetes into my hospital room and said, ‘If he can do it, you can do it,’” she shares. “It really inspired me. And at that moment, I wanted to be someone’s Nick Jonas. I wanted to be someone’s inspiration, whether it be a diabetic or another person with a disease.”
