Maia Mitchell Says 'The Fosters' Season 5 is a 'Turning Point' For Callie (Exclusive)

Maia Mitchell is giving us the goods on Callie’s journey on The Fosters this summer.

JJJ recently caught up with her about the upcoming fifth season.

“Season five is a real turning point for Callie. The situation that plays out in our premiere episode is a huge wake-up call for Callie that she can’t keep making these dangerous, impulsive decisions and it really informs her choices moving forward,” Maia told us. “You see her making huge efforts to be more grounded, she invests a lot of her energy in her art and really tries to anchor herself in that space and explore who she is as an artist. Of course it may not always work! But she’s trying.”

“As far as the family is concerned, as well-intentioned as these kids are, they attract trouble so you won’t see Stef or Lena catch a break this season,” she said.

This season also tackles a very real issue in sex trafficking.

“Sex trafficking is an issue I care about, my parents shared the research with my brother and I growing up,” Maia said. “What is particularly shocking is that the numbers are growing. Human trafficking grew 35 percent in 2017, and that’s in the United States alone so it’s a growing issue and one that is not often in the spotlight. I’m really glad our writers took the opportunity to shine a light to this issue.”
