Jake Miller Opens Up About Producing On His Own for The First Time (Exclusive)

Jake Miller is hard at work getting his upcoming tour ready for the best fans in the world.

Meanwhile, we’re all still obsessing over his latest album, 2AM in LA, which is still blasting in our offices.

JJJ had the opportunity to speak to Jake about producing the entire record on his own and all the challenges that came up.

“It was actually a lot of fun,” he admits. “This was the first time I’ve ever produced any of my music by myself. Usually, I’d have producers making the beats and I just write the words, but this time around, I did all the songwriting and the beat making, with the help from some of my friends.”

Jake adds that “it was kind of like a therapy session to just have that complete creative control and make all these songs from my bedroom and having nobody tell me what to do; to do just whatever my heart wants.”

Since this was Jake‘s first foray into producing an album, there were bound to be some challenges.

“I had never made a beat myself until January this year,” he recalls. “I’m learning everyday still, in terms of making my own instrumentals. You can learn anything on YouTube these days.”

And that’s exactly what he did — “I sat down and in front of that and just searched for how to do things there. I’m practicing hours a day. I’ve made hundreds of beats that I threw straight into the trash can.”

“It’s a big experimental process and just kind of seeing what works and what doesn’t. I’m having a lot of fun just kind of practicing and getting better and better at it, as well as making new songs.”

And that doubting feeling? He had it, but took those doubts and turned them into a drive that produced an amazing album.

“I make beats all the time that I’ll stop and go ‘Man, this requires a really good piano player’ or a good guitar player. I would say my mediocre at playing those, I’m still learning and trying to get better,” Jake says.

“It just inspires me to work even harder and motivates me even harder and practice.”

2AM in LA is out now.
