Dove Cameron Doesn't Write Music Based on Her Personal Experiences

Dove Cameron is pretty much an open book when it comes to sharing things with her fans — however, you probably won’t hear it in her music.

Speaking with Modeliste magazine, the Descendants 2 actress and singer shared that she tried, but just can’t write from her personal experiences.

“I draw my inspiration from honestly not even experiences,” Dove says. “I know that every songwriter in the world is like, my personal experiences. I’ve tried to do that, but they all just end up sounding like really ridiculous. They get too wordy.”

She explains that she comes from a family of wordsmiths — “My mother is a poet and my dad was a pianist and so I just get really wordy and I’m like, it’s not exactly how I feel. I just give up on it. I get really angry and I walk away. There’s like pages and pages of me being like, ‘oh.’”

However, what you will hear in Dove‘s upcoming music are what she likes to call “vibes”.

“I write based on whenever I’ve been in the room and I’m like writing with a group, or with somebody else, I’m very sensory,” she shares.

“I love really nostalgic feeling songs, songs that can make anyone universally hit that thing in them. We all know what that is. We all know that thing. We all know those feelings and that stuff,” Dove adds. “That stuff that is like the life energy that we all feel and it can hit us sometimes. We’re like, oh. It’s that breath. I feel like I like to write about that.”
