Shawn Mendes Was Really Sick While He Was Recording 'There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back'

Last month, Shawn Mendes revealed the story behind his hit song, “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back”, and in a nutshell, we were all pretty surprised about where the idea came from.

However, there’s actually more to the story about that song. So much more.

While listening to the song, have you noticed a little rasp in Shawn‘s voice? Well, turns out there’s a reason for it.

“Actually, really, really kind of weird,” Shawn told MTV News about how the song’s sound came about. “I had to get a surgery on my sinuses, because I was having sinus infections, weird stuff, it doesn’t matter, but I came to LA because I was going to write for two weeks for the new album.”

Shawn actually discovered that he was really sick while in Los Angeles and just before his second surgery, he recorded the song.

“I ended up getting really sick and having to go in for another surgery, but the day right before the surgery, before I even knew I was sick, I went into the studio and I was complaining because my voice, and stuff, not knowing I had this crazy infection, and that’s what actually gave me that crazy rasp feel on the song, because my voice was breaking,” he explained.

“Literally breaking. But, it actually made it sound really cool.”
