China Anne McClain Dishes on How 'Black Lightning' Character Jennifer Will Deal With Her Powers

We’re only a week away from the premiere of Black Lightning, which is one of the best things ever — however, we’re still wondering a bit about Jennifer’s powers.

Played by China Anne McClain, the actress opened up to press about when Jennifer would come into her powers and what her real reaction would be.

“Parents aren’t exactly supposed to keep secrets from their children….This should be an open environment where we can talk, and ‘you guys always tell me talk to you about stuff, but this is something you kept from me,’” China shared about her parents keeping her powers a secret from her.

She adds, “The girls don’t know that their father is Black Lightning…she’s just like, ‘what?!’ She feels like her world has been turned upside down and there’s some anger and some resentment there for sure.”

While we know Anissa (Nafessa Williams) will transform into Thunder, there’s no word when or how Jennifer will get her own superhero identity.

“Well, Jennifer is young, she’s a teenager, and for her getting her powers is very different than Anissa getting her powers for the first time,” China shared. “I’ve said that she’s older, she’s confident, she knows who she is at this point in her life and she’s comfortable with that. Jennifer is still trying to figure that out.”

“To have this happen to her is a huge deal, and she feels like an alien on Earth. It’s difficult for her to deal with; it’s going to be very interesting to see.”

Black Lightning will debut NEXT Tuesday, January 16th after a big premiere in Washington, D.C. this coming weekend.

Love everything about this. I really wish they would get a better hair stylist for China however. Those lacewigs they have her in never look natural. As a teen, its realistic she may not have a lot of money for hair but i cringe everytime i see it on screen. Go natural or buy a better grade of wigs please. I love the costuming and clothing too, especially on the older sister. She is always on point with everything.
