Katy Perry Opens Up About Being an 'Honest' Judge on the New 'American Idol'

Katy Perry covers the March 2018 issue of Glamour magazine, talking all about the new American Idol.

As the only female judge on the panel, with Lionel Richie and country singer Luke Bryan, Katy dished about trying to be honest with everyone who comes to audition, while also recognizing the double standard of it all.

“People also come in with their stories,” she says. “Before they even sing one note, they’ll say something like, ‘I’m homeless,’ and that will impact the way you perceive them.”

Katy continues, “But if they really can’t sing, the personal story has to come second. I hope that I don’t get turned into ‘the b****’ because of that, but I also know that the music industry does not need just another singer.”

She knows that the double standard is there for her too, because she is the only female judge.

“I was saying the other day that Simon Cowell was my favorite judge because he’s very straight-to-the-point,” Katy shared. “Most people who are at home watching American Idol–you know eating food and going about their lives–are thinking either, This [person] can sing, or, This person can’t. And Simon was that kind of judge.”

She adds, “Simon could be mean, because he’s an executive and a man. But you reverse the role, and all of a sudden you’re a b****.”

American Idol will premiere on ABC in March.
