5 Seconds of Summer Open Up About Finding A Brand New Sound

5 Seconds of Summer dropped their big comeback single, “Want You Back” this week — which is a much different sound than what fans are used to.

The guys — Michael Clifford, Ashton Irwin, Calum Hood and Luke Hemmings — spoke with Beats 1 about finding a new sound after not having new music in quite some time.

“After that big cycle of Sounds Good Feels Good and touring the first album we kind of took a few months off,” they shared. “Then we went into the studio for a whole year and had to start the band over again and make a whole new sound.”

5SOS adds that “coming into the band into our 20s…you make it sound more comfortable for us kind of the rest of out career and kind of yeah start again really. It’s definitely not classic 5SOS, [but] keeping our roots but then making it quite the opposite.”
